Histologic Features
- A broad (greater than 6 mm.), but well-circumscribed lesion with slight asymmetry, characterized by
- A proliferation of melanocytes as solitary units and nests at the dermo-epidermal junction
- Nests predominating over single melanocytes
- Melanocytes showing abundant cytoplasm with dusty melanin, hyperchromatic nuclei and prominent nucleoli
- Confluence of some of the nests and melanocytes which also tend to vary in sizes and shapes
- Some scatter of single melanocytes above the DE junction without invasion of the upper epidermis
- Fibroplasia, telangiectasia and a large number of melanophages in the dermis
