Histologic Features
- Foci of pallor of the keratinocytes in the epidermis
- Infected epidermal cells showing steel-gray nuclei, margination of the nucleoplasm and ballooning cytoplasm
- Multiple necrotic keratinocytes
- Focal spongiosis
- A dense lichenoid infiltrate in the papillary dermis with many extravasated red blood cells and nuclear dust
- A superficial and deep perivascular infiltrate of mostly lymphocytes
