Histologic Features
- A necrotic epidermis with ulcerations
- Extensive fibrin deposition in the ulcer base
- An inflammatory process that involves the superficial vessels and extends into the subcutis
- Thick rims of fibrin around vessels
- Thrombi within occluded vessels
- A mixed-cell infiltrate consisting of lymphocytes, neutrophils and plasma cells around the blood vessels
- Minimal leukocytoclasia
- Extensive extravasation of red blood cells
- Many siderophages and fibrosis of the upper dermis in late stages
