Histologic Features
- An ulcerated surface with epidermal hyperplasia of adjacent mucosa
- A dense, diffuse dermal infiltrate consisting of numerous large histiocytes and multinucleated giant cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and a few plasma cells
- Clusters of 2-3 micron organisms surrounded by clear space within the foamy cytoplasm of the histiocytes
- Increased vascularity of the stroma with extravasation of red blood cells
