Histologic Features
- A hyperplastic epidermis infiltrated by lymphocytes and histiocytes
- A dense diffuse infiltrate in the upper dermis consisting predominantly of histiocytoid cells (Langerhans cells), characterized by large, pale indented nuclei (bean-shaped) and abundant cytoplasm
- Considerable pleomorphism of the histiocytes with atypical mitoses
- Multinucleated or foamy histiocytes
- Scattered lymphocytes, eosinophils, and plasma cells
- Edema of the papillary dermis with extravasated red blood cells
