histiocytic cytophagic panniculitis
Histologic Features
- A perivascular and periadnexal infiltrate of lymphocytes, histiocytes, and plasma cells in a nodular fashion within the lower dermis and subcutis, characterized by
- Numerous atypical histiocytes with pale vesicular nuclei and abundant cytoplasm
- Phagocytosis of erythrocytes, lymphocytes and nuclear debris within the cytoplasm of histiocytes (Emperispolesis)
- Some foamy histiocytes
- Foci of fat necrosis and nuclear dust
- Extensive extravasation of red blood cells
- Necrosis of both fat lobules and septa
- Small vessel vasculitis evidenced by the presence of thrombi within lumina and fibrin around vessel walls
