desmoplastic melanoma
Histologic Features
- A scale-crust above the thin epidermis or ulceration
- Subtle proliferation of epidermal melanocytes
- Basaloid hyperplasia with attempts at follicular formation
- Elongated spindle melanocytes arranged in long fascicles extending deep into the dermis
- Neoplastic cells characterized by deceptively monomorphous areas with extremely pleomorphic foci
- Mitotic figures in numbers, some atypical
- Lymphoid aggregates among the spindle cells
- Neurotropism of the spindle melanocytes
- Extension of the fibroplasia and melanocytic proliferation into muscles with destruction of the appendages and fat lobules
