cutaneous leishmaniasis
Histologic Features
- An ulcerated surface adjacent to the irregular pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia
- Marked edema of the subepidermal dermis
- A dense, diffuse infiltrate in the upper dermis consisting of predominantly large histiocytes, numerous plasma cells and a few lymphocytes
- Protozoan leishmania, visualized as multiple gray-blue bodies with a nucleus and a kinetoplast (2-3 microns) within the vacuolated cytoplasm of giant histiocytes
